More Endorsements for HR 676 – Medicare for All

Oregon Teamster Local Endorses HR 676

Portland, Oregon.   Teamster Local 206, which represents workers in a
variety of occupations through out the state of Oregon, has endorsed HR
676, single payer healthcare legislation introduced by Congressman John
Conyers (D-MI).

Tom Leedham, Local 206 Secretary-Treasurer said: “Members of our union are
very involved in health care and have studied a number of proposals for
reform both at the state and national levels.  Health care and health care
issues are often the subject of discussion at our general and contract
ratification meetings.  Because we enjoy a high quality schedule of
benefits we are not inclined to support a proposal that would be a
reduction in benefits or an increase in costs for 206 Teamsters.  A
national single payer plan like HR 676 is the only program we see that
meets our quality and cost criteria.  HR 676, like no other, is consistent
with our union’s overall philosophy: ‘everybody in, nobody out’.

Rivers of Green:
The new administration must
fix locks and dams

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Pittsburgh owes its existence to its rivers, which first served as roads through the wilderness. To this day, the city’s economic fortunes are still linked to river traffic — this is the second-largest inland port in the United States.

Those barges plying our three rivers require an efficient, reliable system of locks and dams, which, in the region’s best interest, should be kept in good repair. As it happens, this is also in the nation’s interest. As he sets his national agenda, it is vital that President-elect Barack Obama keep this in mind because the system is under severe strain.

Don’t Wait For
Slow-Motion
River Wrecks

By Randy Shannon

Progressive Democrats of America

“As the region’s federal engineer, it is my responsibility to report that the Lower Mon Project is facing a perfect storm. Inefficient funding; the insolvency of the IWTF; an aging and crumbling infrastructure; an increase in unscheduled, unexpected repairs; and a flat-lined operations and maintenance budget coupled with rising costs…threaten the reliability of the sytem.” – Colonel Michael P. Crall, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, July 3, 2008

Our new President and Congress need to act with urgency to address the critical state of this artery of the regional economy. Don’t watch the slow motion wreck. Take action to get the word out and up the chain to Washington! The US Army Corps of Engineers is not a lobbying organization. The people of western Pennsylvania must lobby for their share of any new funds allocated to infrastructure upgrading.

Allegheny Lock and
Dam #6 on the Verge
of Catastrophic Failure

By Randy Shannon
Progressive Democrats of America

The Ohio River and its tributaries, the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River are the artery of commerce to the Port of Pittsburgh, the second largest inland port of the United States. Due to years of negligence and underfunding of our infrastructure this navigation system is on the verge of catastrophic failure. The Army Corps of Engineers press release linked here

states in the calmest language possible that we face a potential social, economic, and ecological disaster due to the critical disrepair of the locks and dams that make the rivers navigable. A dam failure would flood thousands of acres, starve water and sanitation facilities, and halt navigation. Most economic activity in the region will shut down, including the Pittsburgh International Airport and steel and cement production. The region would experience shortages of gasoline and basic foodstuff. Twelve coal fired electric power plants would face shutdown due to the halt of coal shipments on the rivers.

Dump Lieberman! Don’t Wait for Change!

Please join me to urge the Democratic Party Senate leaders to strip Sen. Joe Lieberman, who campaigned for war and austerity with McCain, of all and any leadership positions with the majority Democratic caucus.

I just signed this petition to the members of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, who now determine Joe Lieberman’s fate as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Harry Reid has told Lieberman that he has to go, but Joe is now openly threatening the caucus.  Please sign this petition and let them know that Lieberman must go, once and for all.

Vote Rousseau: Key Link in the Battle for PA Democrats

A Union Leader Battles to Win the Pennsylvania 14th Legislative District for Working Families

By Randy Shannon, PA 4th CD Chapter, Progressive Democrats of America

This year Dennis Rousseau, a leader of the Carpenter’s Union, is fighting to win back the 14th District seat  for labor and the Democratic Party. Dennis has been a member of the Carpenters Union for 33 years. He is the Business Representative for Local 422 and Local 500 and the Political Action Chairman of the Greater Pennsylvania Regional Council of Carpenters. He is a volunteer and leader in many programs that help working families in Beaver County cope with job loss and dislocation.

Progressive Democrats in the 4th District should spend the rest of the month knocking on doors in Midland, Rochester, New Brighton, Chippewa, and Beaver Falls for Rousseau along with the Obama-Biden ticket. While Beaver County is key to winning the state for Obama, the 14th Legislative District is key to winning a progressive legislature for Pennsylvania.

In 2010 western Pennsylvania will lose a U.S. Congressional seat as young people are leaving to search for jobs. The Congressional District map will be redrawn by the Pennsylvania legislature. Dennis Rousseau has pledged to do all he can to make sure that western Pennsylvania loses a Republican seat in Congress instead of a Democratic one. Winning back the 14th District Legislative seat is important to Progressive Democrats of America.

Because of the last Republican redistricting, the 4th CD is stretched from the Ohio border to Monroeville, east of Pittsburgh. The 4th CD is a weaker Democratic District with Republican districts to the north and to the south. In 2010, redistricting can potentially strengthen the Democratic 4th CD, eliminate one Republican district, and swing another Republican district to the Democratic column in western Pennsylvania.

Dennis Rousseau and a united Democratic caucus from this area can bargain for a larger 4th CD west of Pittsburgh. This kind of district will be a more forceful voice for Medicare for All, for ending the war in Iraq, and bringing funding for infrastructure projects to western Pennsylvania.

The 14th Legislative District has been one of the strongest Democratic seats in the Legislature because of the strong union influence in the steel, glass, machine, and service industries in the Beaver valley. That seat was lost to an inept Republican due to voter anger at the culture of arrogance and corruption that permeated the legislature in Harrisburg. Top Democratic and Republican leaders were involved and subsequently were replaced by candidates from the opposite party, no matter how weak they were. We now have an ineffectual and out of touch legislator with no base.

Dennis Rousseau is struggling against a Republican smear campaign that tries to associate every Democrat with the culture of corruption. The AFL-CIO campaign for Obama-Biden is helping Dennis with combined lit drops and phone banking. Voters must hear that electing Dennis is key to an economic recovery in our area.

Redistricting for a stronger Democratic Congressional delegation in Washington will help carry progressive legislation in the second half of an Obama presidency. Dennis is currently behind in the polls. A boost from Progressive Democrats can make a difference in the 14th Legislative District of Beaver County.

South Dakota and California Labor Councils Endorse HR 676

Two more central labor councils have endorsed HR 676, single payer
healthcare legislation introduced by Congressman John Conyers (D-MI).

One hundred and sixteen central labor councils (CLC’s) and Area Labor
Federations (ALF’s) have now endorsed the Conyers bill.

In South Dakota, President James Larson reports that the Sioux Falls
Trades and Labor Assembly AFL-CIO endorsed HR 676.

In California, the Sacramento Central Labor Council AFL-CIO reports that
it has endorsed HR 676.

WHAT IS HR676
HR 676 would institute a single payer health care system in the U.S. by
expanding a greatly improved Medicare system to every resident.

HR 676 would cover every person in the U. S. for all necessary medical
care including prescription drugs, hospital, surgical, outpatient
services, primary and preventive care, emergency services, dental, mental
health, home health, physical therapy, rehabilitation (including for
substance abuse), vision care, chiropractic and long term care.

HR 676 ends deductibles and co-payments.  HR 676 would save billions
annually by eliminating the high overhead and profits of the private
health insurance industry and HMOs.

HR 676 currently has 92 co-sponsors in addition to Conyers.  Co-sponsors

Obama House Party in Beaver Falls

One of four thousand Obama houseparties across the nation was held at the home of Ms. Dawn Monteiro in Beaver Falls, PA.  Ms. Leanne Spearman, another local Obama organizer, made a brief welcoming speech. She said Senator Obama’s book “Dreams from My Father” and his famous speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention helped her decide to become part of the solution to our nation’s problems. She described Obama’s campaign as one that has empowered people by inspiring hope for a better future. Quoting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s famous admonition she closed saying “I am a volunteer because of the ‘urgency of now.'”

The house party welcomed three Obama campaign staff workers who have moved to Beaver County. There was a lively discussion of the economic problems facing the working people of the district many of whom are “a paycheck away from poverty.” Many retirees find it difficult to make ends meet. All participants shared experiences talking to voters who are confused about their choice in November due to their feelings about race. The group made plans for voter registration at festivals, fairs, and other events through the summer.
