Appeal to Progressives: Join the Nov. 2nd Battle against Austerity

Pittsburgh March for Jobs

by Tina Shannon

Dear Fellow Progressive Democrats,

Do you think it is important to participate in this election?

We progressives are just beginning to find our voice. People are starting to want to hear what we have to say. Here in Beaver County the regular Dems invited us to their Annual Fundraising Banquet even though we bring no significant monetary resources. We were invited to participate in the One Nation coalition of labor, the NAACP & community leaders that took 4 buses to the October 2nd rally in DC. Our public events to discuss important issues are well attended.

To continue building in Beaver County, in the 4th Congressional District, we must use our growing strength to help stop the far-right from taking power in this election. All the races are close. If our effort makes the difference, we can build a stronger progressive movement. If we help the 2 Democratic labor candidates for State Representative get elected then we have a relationship with them as they move into power.

Pat Toomey is to the right of Bush. Toomey & Corbett are test cases for Tea Party politics. We might be disappointed that we haven’t made as much progress as we wanted for health care, peace, jobs, and the environment. But we must ask ourselves; do we want to be ruled by the likes of the Tea Party? If we do the work that prevents the Tea Party from gaining ascendancy in our country it may feel like the status quo goes on like usual. But we will have made a tremendous contribution by building the foundation for future progress.

We must take a hard look and realize that the right-wing & Tea Party faction of the Republican Party are using the old fascist playbook. Not only are they spreading lies and hate.

Have you seen the video of a liberal blogger getting her head stomped at a Kentucky Senatorial political debate because she tried to get a photo with the Republican candidate? In Alaska a reporter was detained for an hour by Tea Party candidate security for demanding answers on record. Congressman Grijalva of Arizona, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, received mail that was reported as toxic and numerous death threats.

These are scare tactics that will pave the way for more violence. They are designed to silence opposition to their lies and to the corporate takeover of our government.

I’m asking you to do more than vote. I’m asking you to come out to the IBEW hall and join with our labor brothers & sisters at the phone banks. If you’re able, come & walk the neighborhoods of our towns & distribute campaign material for Sestak, Onorato & Dennis Powell or Frank Bovalino.

Union members are a primary target of this GOTV effort because they are more likely to go to the polls and they are more likely to vote for Democrats. Our voices are needed to help overcome the confusion and despondency nurtured by the $millions of Republican and corporate campaign ads.

I’ve included the schedule. Feel free to email or call me. I’ll be at the IBEW hall as much as possible. When you get there sign in as a member of PDA.

In solidarity,
Tina B Shannon

  1. There are lot of people registered as Democrats so if we can get out that vote it will help. I just received an e-mail from Jim Burn State Democratic Chairman reporting that there are attempts to suppress the turn out by Republicans (Corbett) in the Philadelphia area which is a key turnout area for Democrats.

It’s happened before. So let’s work to get Democratic voting turnout. It might really matter for the tight races. Polling in this age of changing communications might not be that reliable. Unstable polls can be an outcome of unreliable polling. For example, which phones do you poll, stationary phones or cell phones? Which ones count the most? And so on. Our polls might be signaling us that it could go either way or that the odds favor Democratic candidates more than we think. Democratic state representative candidate Frank Bovalino told me that high turnout would help his cause. ‘We’ll be alright if we get a good turnout,’ he told me.
